A dripping showerhead wastes thousands of gallons of water per year and that annoying drip sound can keep you up at night. The fix is almost always simple and costs under $10.
What Causes a Dripping Showerhead?
The most common cause is a worn rubber washer or O-ring inside the showerhead connection. Mineral buildup from hard water can also cause dripping by preventing a proper seal.
What You’ll Need
An adjustable wrench, plumber’s tape (also called Teflon tape), replacement washers, and white vinegar for mineral buildup.
Step 1: Turn Off the Water
Turn off the water supply to the shower. This is usually done at the main shut-off valve.
Step 2: Remove the Showerhead
Wrap a cloth around the showerhead connection to protect it. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the showerhead counterclockwise. Be gentle — old pipes can be fragile.
Step 3: Clean Mineral Buildup
Soak the showerhead in white vinegar for 30 minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any mineral deposits around the connection point.
Step 4: Replace the Washer and Apply Plumber’s Tape
Check the rubber washer inside the connection. If it looks worn or flat, replace it. Wrap fresh plumber’s tape clockwise around the pipe threads before reattaching the showerhead.
Step 5: Reattach and Test
Screw the showerhead back on by hand first, then tighten with the wrench — but don’t overtighten. Turn the water back on and check for drips.
Still Dripping?
If it still drips, the entire showerhead may need replacing. A quality showerhead costs $20–40 and installs in minutes.
