A broken window latch is a security risk. Replacing it takes less than 15 minutes and costs under $15.
What Causes a Window Latch to Break? Most latches break due to worn metal, paint buildup, or a bent strike plate.
What You’ll Need A screwdriver and a replacement window latch.
Step 1: Remove the Old Latch Unscrew the two screws holding the latch to the window frame. Pull the old latch off.
Step 2: Clean the Area Remove any paint buildup or debris from the mounting area. The new latch needs a clean flat surface.
Step 3: Install the New Latch Position the new latch and screw it into place. Most latches use the same screw holes as the old one.
Step 4: Test the Latch Open and close the window several times to make sure the latch engages properly with the strike plate.
Step 5: Adjust if Needed If the latch doesn’t align with the strike plate, loosen the strike plate screws slightly and reposition it.
