A bathroom extractor fan that doesn’t work allows moisture to build up, leading to damp and mold.
Step 1: Clean the Fan
Turn off the power. Remove the fan cover. Clean the fan blades and motor housing thoroughly with a dry cloth. Replace the cover, restore power, and test. This fixes most fans immediately.
Step 2: Check the Isolation Switch
Test whether the fan runs when the bathroom light is on. If it runs on the light circuit but not the switch, replace the switch.
Step 3: Check the Duct
Inspect the duct for kinks or blockages. Check the external vent cover opens freely when the fan runs.
Step 4: Replace the Motor
If the fan hums but doesn’t turn, the motor has failed. Search the model number on the fan casing to find the correct replacement motor.
Step 5: Replace the Unit
If the motor is unavailable, replace the entire bathroom extractor fan. Turn off power, disconnect wiring, remove old unit, fit new one, reconnect wiring, and test.
