How to Fix a Broken Smoke Detector

A smoke detector that beeps constantly or won’t stop alarming is usually a simple fix.

What Causes It? Dead or dying battery, dust buildup, or end of lifespan.

Step 1: Replace the battery first — most beeping is caused by a low battery. Use a fresh 9V battery.

Step 2: Clean the detector — dust inside triggers false alarms. Use a vacuum or compressed air to clean the vents.

Step 3: Reset the detector — hold the test button for 15-20 seconds after replacing the battery.

Step 4: Check the manufacture date on the back — smoke detectors expire after 10 years and must be replaced.

Step 5: If none of these work replace the entire unit — a good smoke detector costs $20-30 and could save your life.
