A leaking pipe is one of those home problems that demands immediate attention. Even a slow drip can cause serious water damage, mold growth, and structural problems if left untreated.
Immediate Emergency Fix
If you have an active leak right now, use a pipe repair clamp. Wrap it around the pipe over the leak and tighten to create a watertight seal in minutes while you arrange a permanent repair.
What You’ll Need
Pipe repair tape, PTFE tape, adjustable wrench, and replacement fittings if needed.
Fixing a Leaking Joint
Turn off the water. Dry the joint completely. Unscrew the connection, clean the threads, wrap fresh PTFE tape clockwise around the male thread four times, and reconnect firmly.
Fixing a Pinhole Leak
Dry the pipe completely. Wrap self-fusing silicone tape tightly around the pipe starting two inches before the hole and ending two inches after. Overlap each wrap by half and stretch the tape as you apply it. This creates a permanent waterproof bond.
Fixing a Leaking Supply Line
Turn off the shut-off valve. Unscrew the supply line at both ends. Wrap PTFE tape on both threaded ends before attaching the new supply line. Tighten by hand then give a quarter turn with a wrench. Turn water back on and check for drips.
Fixing a Leak Under the Sink
Dry everything completely and run the water to identify exactly where the drip starts. Check the slip nuts on the P-trap — they often just need hand tightening. If tightening doesn’t work, remove the connection, inspect the rubber washer inside, and replace it if worn.
