A broken door handle is more than just an inconvenience — on an exterior door it is a security issue. Replacing a door handle takes under 30 minutes and costs $15-50 for parts.
Step 1: Remove the Old Handle
Look for a small slot on the cover plate — insert a flathead screwdriver and twist to pop it off. Some handles have a small grub screw on the underside — use an Allen key to loosen it. Unscrew all visible fixing screws and pull both sides of the handle away from the door.
Step 2: Remove the Latch
Look at the door edge. Unscrew the latch plate and pull the latch mechanism out of the door.
Step 3: Measure the Backset
Measure the distance from the door edge to the center of the handle hole — this is the backset, typically 60mm or 70mm. Buy a door handle replacement set that matches this measurement.
Step 4: Install the New Latch
Insert the new latch into the door edge with the angled face pointing toward the door frame. Screw the latch plate firmly into place.
Step 5: Install the New Handle
Feed the spindle through the latch from one side. Align the handle plate and insert the fixing screws. Attach the second handle on the other side. Replace any cover plates.
Step 6: Test
Open and close the door several times. The latch should engage and release smoothly. If it doesn’t align with the strike plate, reposition the strike plate slightly.
