Drafty windows are responsible for up to 30% of heat loss in a typical home. Fixing them is one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make — most fixes cost under $30.
How to Find the Draft
Hold a lit candle or tissue paper close to the window frame on a windy day. Watch for movement. Check all four sides of the frame, the corners, and around the locking mechanism.
Fix 1: Replace Weatherstripping
Remove the old weatherstripping completely. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol. Cut new self-adhesive weatherstripping to length and press firmly into position along all four sides of the window frame.
Fix 2: Recaulk the Frame
Cut out all old caulk completely. Apply a continuous bead of silicone caulk along the joint between the frame and wall. Smooth with a wet finger. Allow 24 hours to cure.
Fix 3: Window Insulation Film
Apply double-sided tape around the frame. Cut the window insulation film slightly larger than the window. Press onto the tape and use a hairdryer to shrink it tight. This reduces heat loss through the glass by up to 55%.
Fix 4: Draft Excluder Tape
Apply self-adhesive foam draft excluder tape to the closing edges of the window. This creates an immediate seal on windows that rattle or don’t close flush.
Fix 5: Secondary Glazing
Install magnetic secondary glazing panels on the inside of the window. They attach to a metal strip around the frame and can be removed in summer. They reduce heat loss by up to 60%.
