Damp and mold are two of the most serious problems a homeowner can face. Left untreated they cause structural damage and create serious health problems including respiratory issues and allergies.
The Three Types of Damp
Rising damp appears as a tide mark on walls no higher than one meter from the floor. Penetrating damp appears as patches that worsen during or after rain. Condensation damp is the most common type and appears as black mold spots in corners and behind furniture.
Fixing Condensation Damp and Mold
Wear rubber gloves and a face mask. Spray mold remover spray on the affected area and let sit for 10 minutes. Scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Never paint over mold without killing it first.
Improve ventilation — open windows daily even in winter. Install extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens. Move furniture away from external walls to allow air circulation.
Apply anti-mold paint to walls in high-risk areas. It contains fungicides that prevent mold regrowth.
Fixing Rising Damp
Apply damp proof paint to the interior wall surface to prevent further damage while arranging professional treatment for the root cause.
Fixing Penetrating Damp
Check the roof for missing tiles. Clear blocked gutters. Check pointing between bricks and repoint where necessary. Apply exterior wall sealant to cracked rendered surfaces.
Monitoring Humidity
Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity between 40-60%. Above 60% condensation and mold become serious problems.
